The ProtoComp is Innovation Central Brisbane’s flagship industry–student innovation challenge. It’s where big ideas meet real-world challenges, and where diverse teams collaborate to design, build, and showcase working digital prototypes.
Delivered in partnership with industry leaders, the ProtoComp gives students a chance to work alongside experts, access cutting-edge technology, and experience the full innovation journey – from first pitch to final prototype.
Why Diverse Teams Win
The best solutions don’t come from one kind of thinker, they come from the combination of different strengths. At ProtoComp, we draw on the Hipster–Hacker–Hustler model to form balanced, high-performing teams.
Hipster: Creative thinker & designer, shaping user experience, branding, and storytelling. Hacker: Technical expert, bringing the coding, engineering, and build power. Hustler: Entrepreneurial driver, focusing on strategy, validation, and stakeholder engagement.
This diversity is what makes ProtoComp teams stand out – creativity, technical capability, and commercial drive working together to solve complex challenges and deliver innovative, viable solutions.
A high-energy weekend where students respond to a real-world industry provocation. Over two days, teams ideate, refine, and pitch their concepts to a judging panel for the chance to receive project funding and progress to the build phase.
Skills in action: Rapid problem-solving, creative ideation, and teamwork under pressure.
Phase 2: Build
Selected teams enter a structured program, meeting weekly with mentors from industry and academia. They prototype, test, and refine their solutions using design thinking, technical development, and user feedback — building on the complementary strengths of their Hipsters, Hackers, and Hustlers.
Skills in action: Technical development, user experience design, market validation, and agile project management.
Phase 3: Showcase
The journey ends with a public showcase, where teams present their working prototypes to an audience of industry leaders, potential investors, and the innovation community. It’s a celebration of collaboration, creativity, and the potential for real-world impact.
Skills in action:Pitching, storytelling, networking, and stakeholder engagement.
Why It Matters
The ProtoComp doesn’t just create prototypes, it creates connections, skills, and opportunities that extend far beyond the program. Many teams go on to develop their solutions further, secure industry partnerships, or use their experience as a launchpad for their careers.
By embedding the Hipster–Hacker–Hustler approach, we ensure every team is equipped to tackle complex challenges from every angle, and turn bold ideas into lasting impact.
