Why diverse minds make stronger solutions
At Innovation Central Brisbane, we know that game-changing ideas are rarely born from one perspective. That’s why our ProtoComp program builds teams using the Hipster–Hacker–Hustler model – a framework used by leading start-ups, accelerators, and innovation labs worldwide.
Each identity represents a different mindset and skill set. Together, they form a balanced team capable of creativity, execution, and impact.
The Trio
The Hipster
The creative.
Hipsters are the designers, storytellers, and experience-shapers. They’re attuned to what users need, how products feel, and what makes an idea memorable. Whether it’s branding, user experience, or front-end design – hipsters turn complexity into clarity.
Skills you might see:
• Graphic or UI/UX design
• Communications or marketing
• Psychology, creative industries, or brand strategy
The Hacker
The builder.
Hackers are the technical brains and problem-solvers. They’re the ones who can bring ideas to life through systems, prototypes, or code. Whether it’s software, data, or product engineering – hackers thrive on figuring things out.
Skills you might see:
• Coding or engineering
• Data analytics or AI
• System design or product development
The Hustler
The driver.
Hustlers are the strategic thinkers and communicators who can pitch ideas, manage projects, and rally support. They speak the language of opportunity – turning ideas into action and outcomes.
Skills you might see:
• Business strategy or entrepreneurship
• Sales, operations, or finance
• Leadership and communication
Why it works
Start-ups, accelerators and innovation educators have long used the 3H model (Hipster, Hacker, Hustler) to ensure their teams are multidimensional, resilient, and user-focused.
This approach has been backed by research into team dynamics and cognitive diversity, which shows that cross-functional collaboration outperforms siloed expertise – especially in uncertain or fast-moving environments .
At ICB, we’ve seen this model help hundreds of students bring ideas to life. Teams that embrace their identity roles – while learning to flex outside of them – consistently build more sophisticated, human-centred, and viable solutions.
It's not about putting people in boxes
Most of us sit somewhere between these identities. You might be a creative coder (hacker–hipster) or a strategy-minded designer (hipster–hustler). The goal isn’t to label, but to help teams build self-awareness and find balance.
When each person plays to their strengths – and values what others bring – collaboration flourishes.
In our ProtoComps, every team is built this way
This isn’t just a theory – it’s how we build our teams in ProtoComp. From ideation to pitch, our student teams are structured to combine:
• Creative expression (Hipster)
• Technical capability (Hacker)
• Strategic direction (Hustler)
Whether you’re a first-time innovator or an experienced student founder, this framework helps you grow your skills, challenge your thinking, and deliver results.
