Optimisation of an underwater optical communication system for low bandwidth data transmission in turbid coastal waters.

In-Situ Marine Optics

Skills requirements: C/C++, Embedded Systems, Data Analysis: IDL/Matlab/Python

A major limitation in achieving robust IoT / Wireless data telemetry to monitor marine environments is getting the data from the seabed to the air. Cabled solutions are often prohibitively expensive and / or unreliable. Acoustic solutions are often power hungry and / or don’t work well in coastal environments.

This project will initially involve testing a prototype LED-based optical MODEM in order to determine practicable limits to the application of this technology in turbid coastal waters, and subsequently look for ways in which the performance can be optimised through hardware and / or firmware modifications.

IoT-enabling rugged water quality sensors for marine monitoring applications

In-Situ Marine Optics

Skills requirements: C/C++, Embedded Systems

Recent nanosatellite telemetry solutions present new opportunities for low cost environmental monitoring programmes. This project involves integrating existing water quality sensors into a Myriota FlexSense modem in order to collect, pre-process and transmit water quality data to the cloud. Recent two-way packet implementation over the Myriota network should allow remote configuration of devices and this functionality is to be investigated.

Spectrogram Acoustic Classification

Vanguard Technologies

Skills requirements: Python, PyTorch, AI, Computer Vision

Vanguard has developed a prototype acoustic classification model using a convolutional neural network (CNN) to classify environmental sounds based on their spectrogram representations.

This internship project aims to enhance the existing model and associated workflow by incorporating robust labelling processes for both training datasets and model inference. The intern will also develop analytical tools to quantitatively assess model accuracy. These tools will facilitate iterative hyperparameter optimisation, providing valuable insights into the volume and quality of data necessary for effective model training and deployment.

AI for Embedded Acoustic Classification

Vanguard Technologies

Skills requirements: Python, familiarity with microcontroller programming and embedded systems, understanding of edge computing principles, and experience with developing and testing digital twins.

Vanguard has developed a prototype acoustic classification model using a convolutional neural network (CNN) to classify environmental sounds based on their spectrogram representations. The data are collected in remote locations where logistical constraints make pre-collection analysis challenging. This project will assess the feasibility of deploying the classification model on low-power microcontrollers, enabling on-device inference. ICP will develop a digital twin of the model to evaluate its performance and accuracy in a controlled environment at Curtin’s Bentley campus.

Innovation Central Perth - Living Lab

Innovation Central Perth

Skills requirements: Familiarity with Cisco Webex and Meraki technologies, basic networking knowledge, data extraction and integration skills, and experience in developing dashboards for visualising data insights.

Innovation Central Perth Living Lab is seeking an intern to assist with extracting data from existing technologies within ICP areas and to help develop an interactive dashboard that highlights derived insights. The intern will utilise Webex Smart Boards, Meraki cameras, and Cisco smart spaces technologies to create engaging demos. Possible applications include counting people entering and exiting meeting spaces, tracking usage statistics of meeting rooms and common areas, and object detection to identify individuals wearing protective equipment such as shoes or PPE. These demonstrations will be used to refresh and enhance the current demo space.
