Project Title:

Motor Electric Current Sensor Development

Project Collaborators:

Alcoa

This project entailed the development of a sensor that measures the high electrical current running through Alcoa’s precipitation-tank agitator motor. The sensor needed to be developed, and implemented, in a safe, reliable, and non-invasive manner.

Approach

The summer intern researched and developed a wireless current electric sensor using an ISA100 Sensor Rapid Development Kit and integrated this into Alcoa’s pre-established ISA100 Network.

Outcome

01

The reliability of the current transformer sensor tested successfully – the next step involves the further integration of the sensor into ISA100 Wireless Network. This will further encourage growth in the development and usage of wireless sensing on other equipment and processes at Alcoa, expanding their existing network structure.
