Project Title:

Global Fireball Observatory Project

Project Collaborators:

Space Science and Technology Centre, School of Earth and Planetary Sciences, Curtin Institute for Computation

The Space Science and Technology Centre (SSTC) at Curtin University is the largest planetary science research group in the Southern Hemisphere. The Fireball team operates a continental scale facility called Desert Fireball Network (DFN), which recently expanded into Global Fireball Observatory (GFO) with the support from the Australian Research Council Linkage Infrastructure, Equipment and Facilities (LIEF) program. The goal of this project is to deploy camera systems and observatory equipment all around the world to maximise the fireball observation area and meteorite recovery, and to collaborate with over 19 institutions within Australia and other countries.

Approach

Fireball detection software is one of the modules forming an automated GFO data processing/reduction pipeline to process the fireball orbital dataset captured by the camera systems. The software was capable to work in the constrained environment. An on-board Linux based computer processes the images during the day to detect fireballs by implementing the software that utilises both conventional image processing and machine learning approaches. Approximately 60GB of pictures are usually taken throughout the night before they are split into multiple tiles and processed through fireball detection modules. Tiles which only contain fireballs are sent over the mobile network to the local server. The project team studied the standardising versions procedure for software developing and testing and integrated this within the current processing pipeline. The team also integrated the data filtration tool and human review tool to clean up the fireball imagery data before training the machine learning model.

Outcome

01

This ICP-induced collaboration successfully worked together to improve the software to operate on all the DFN/GFO camera systems and on a workstation in the Fireballs office with the up-to-date software libraries.

Outcome

02

The project improved the ratio of successful event detection and also enabled the model to successfully generalise with new data.
