Water Leak Detection

This project aimed to develop a prototype that can detect minor waterpipe leaks, alerting homeowners when water is being lost. Small leaks often go undetected, despite costing homeowners valuable money and resources – hence the importance of detecting leakages early.

Approach

Relevant materials were optimised for efficiency, then prototyped on a breadboard before being transferred to PCB. A method was then considered for sending data to a dashboard.

Outcome

01

A successful prototype was developed, able to recognise small leaks in a water piping system.

Outcome

02

A dashboard is being considered for visualisation of the data, in order to alert homeowners of potential leaks. The dashboard will be clearly interpretable and therefore simplify the process of action.

Recreational Vessel Detection

This project aimed to create an object detection system by utilising AI in order to recognise vessel usage and behaviours at the Spoilbank Marina.

Approach

The location of boats and vessels was detected by using GPS and stereo vision, calculating metrics such as speed and direction. The data was then processed through an algorithm which can identify abnormal behaviour.

Outcome

01

Port operators are now able to be alerted of abnormal vessel behaviour through SMS notification.

A live dashboard has been developed that features a satellite view of a map with real time movement, and individual tracking of each vessel and boat.

This project aimed to provide research into the various ways that bank guarantees can be issued via a digital contract, ultimately determining an optimal solution to be implemented.

Approach

Multiple existing case studies were researched, exploring how digital bank guarantees have been established in external firms. Advantages and disadvantages were considered based on a variety of specific metrics.

Various technologies have been researched, each providing an insight into the methodology available for digital bank guarantees.

A multi-criteria decision analysis has been undergone, weighing each option to evaluate the most ideal solution for Assuro’s needs.

This project aimed to utilise machine learning to decrease workload of maintenance crew in remote sites.

Approach

Using Machine Learning and edge computing to perform relevant tasks. By using these techniques, the summer interns were able to read analogue gauges, send relevant data to the cloud, and present the data in clearly interpretable format.

Edge computing is utilised to successfully process data closely to the source, decreasing latency and providing stronger security,

This project aimed to develop a marketing campaign in order to promote EMHS’ HIVE facilities by establishing a brand identity and increasing brand engagement.

Approach

Research and analysis is conducted in order to understand the target market and segment them into relevant groups, where analysis such as surveying, reporting and researching is undergone. A competitor analysis is also conducted in order to establish a valuable brand positioning, and a marketing plan is ultimately produced that highlights brand identity and recommendations for HIVE’s future.

Outcome

01

A thorough marketing plan was produced, providing the client with relevant opportunity to enhance the established brand identity.

The marketing plan was appropriately pitched to all stakeholders in order to succinctly communicate all important points.

This project aimed to review available industrial LoRa devices and networking components in order to evaluate their relevance to the company.

Approach

Appropriate trials were performed in order to analyse each device. The summer intern conducted surveys for each component while using the LoRa network to transmit measurements of vibrations, temperature and valve position of the equipment.

Outcome

A catalogue of LoRa device information was developed based on the survey results, providing insightful guidance to the hosting company.

To utilise an existing hardware platform to develop, design and prototype a mobile app and website.

Approach

Utilising coreAPI and Figma capabilities, the student intern needed to ensure that the platform was minimal, simple to use and easy to navigate. Managers and administration needed to have secured access to key app components.

Outcome

A mobile app prototype was successfully developed, facilitating an intuitive, easy-to-navigate interface that meets all the requirements of the platform.

The use of Figma allowed the students to display the app prototype in a realistic, navigable display.

Automated Recipe Selection Through Ambient Temperature Monitoring

Facilitated through our funding partner METS Ignited, this project entailed the creation of various temperature monitoring devices, able to communicate wirelessly for analysis.

These would be stand-alone devices which would be able to communicate wirelessly to a central device. Communication will be enabled through the low power LoRa protocol, and the central device would be responsible for data analysis and potentially even factory automation in the future.

Approach

The summer intern designed and tested various temperature monitoring devices. The intern built custom nodes to measure temperature readings and used the LoRa protocol to transmit the readings to a central device. The central device used an Arduino to manage communication between nodes and the data would be sent to a Raspberry Pi, which runs a powerful data analysis software called Node Red.

Outcome

01

3 different node designs were created, tested and presented to the client. The next step would potentially lead to installation of the nodes on site for data.

The system is independent of all other systems and can be scaled to over 500 sensors.

Data can be analysed through the Node Red software, which can be further developed in the future.

The objective of this project was to design a user-focused building management system interface that displays information from other adjacent projects such as building sensor data, processed Landgate data and case study information.

Approach

The summer intern brainstormed a target market, then created some initial prototypes of the design. The design was further refined with the consultation of supervisors and other adjacent project members to ultimately achieve a good balance of user intuitiveness and level of detail.

A final high-fidelity design was created which was able to be used as a template for development.

Offline Voice Control Bed

Technology for Ageing & Disability (TADWA)

The aim of this project was to implement a low latency voice stopping system prototype. The system would serve as a testing ground, which could ultimately be used to modify the current Google home themed solution.

As a testing device, the prototype allowed for the development of recommendations and research that could dictate its ultimate implementation.

Approach

The summer intern improved on the existing Offline Voice Stopping System project and developed new solutions to remedy its existing flaws. The intern designed a stand-alone PCB that is able to house the newly introduced Arduino speech recognition library. This library was tested to see its suitability for this project.

After a rigorous testing process, the Arduino Speech Recognition Library was selected to be continued to developed in future projects. The intern also developed a low latency stop function, to be used in the event of an emergency.

Outcome

01

The Offline Voice Stopping System will serve as the testing ground for the new technology. This will allow TADWA to decide whether this is an appropriate platform to use for future product development.

Multiple useful recommendations were formed, dictating the decision that to utilise the Offline Voice Stopping System.
