MasterTech Hackathon Kicks Off

Australia’s Brightest Innovators Compete at Cisco Live for the Future of Sustainable Supermarkets!

The National Industry Innovation Network (NIIN), led by Cisco, is Australia’s premier collaborative network, bringing together the nation’s top universities, industry experts, and government partners to tackle critical challenges through innovation. Through initiatives like the MasterTech Hackathon, the NIIN is empowering students from across Australia to address real-world issues and make an impact that resonates nationally.

Today, the MasterTech Hackathon begins, marking an exciting chapter for the NIIN’s commitment to driving digital innovation. Sponsored by Coles Group and facilitated by Jeff Jones, Director of Innovation Central Melbourne at La Trobe University, this program is designed to inspire Australia’s next generation of problem-solvers. Over the next two days, 15 top university students from Innovation Central hubs in Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Canberra, and Brisbane will collaborate in a hybrid mode from their respective Innovation Centrals. Then, they’ll head to Melbourne to continue their work live on the NIIN (National Industry Innovation Network) stand at Cisco Live—a highly anticipated event where their prototypes will take shape right before the audience’s eyes.

The Challenge: Designing Coles’ Sustainable Store of the Future
At the heart of this hackathon is a question posed by Coles Group, whose mission is “Helping all Australians live and eat healthier, happier lives.” Coles challenged the students to think boldly: “What would you want to see in a Coles sustainable store of the future?” This provocation encourages the students to reimagine the supermarket of tomorrow—one that balances environmental impact with social responsibility and economic viability while supporting Coles’ mission to improve the health and happiness of Australians.

During this hackathon, the students will explore various aspects of sustainability, ranging from waste reduction and energy efficiency to sustainable sourcing and eco-friendly packaging. Some of the ideas discussed during the briefing include:

• Waste Reduction: Innovative approaches to minimising food waste through AI-driven inventory management, dynamic pricing, and food donation platforms.
• Energy Efficiency: Energy-saving measures like smart energy management, LED lighting, and predictive maintenance for refrigeration systems.
• Sustainable Sourcing: Emphasising partnerships with ethical suppliers, organic and local product offerings, and blockchain for supply chain transparency.
• Eco-Friendly Packaging: Solutions like reusable packaging management and smart labeling to encourage a circular economy.
• Community Engagement: Tools for educating consumers on sustainable choices, supporting local farmers, and building community connections.

These areas form a comprehensive blueprint for how Coles could transform the supermarket experience with sustainability at its core, while staying true to its mission of enhancing the lives of Australians.

Building Digital Prototypes with Industry-Leading Technology
Under the guidance of Jeff Jones and supported by the Innovation Central network, students will have access to advanced technology, including VR/AR equipment, IoT devices, AI development platforms, and 3D printing tools. These resources empower the students to develop prototypes that are not only conceptual but grounded in practical, scalable solutions.

Over the next two days, the teams will brainstorm, design, and refine their ideas, working towards prototypes that embody their vision of a sustainable supermarket. Their journey will culminate at Cisco Live in Melbourne, where they will demonstrate their progress live, sharing their innovative ideas with industry leaders, fellow students, and attendees.

Pitching Solutions on the World Stage
On Wednesday afternoon, the excitement will reach its peak as the teams pitch their solutions and demonstrate their digital prototypes on the NIIN stand, located at the heart of the Cisco Live World of Solutions floor. This is an incredible opportunity for these talented students to showcase their work in front of an audience of technology experts, industry leaders, and innovators from around the world. Their presentations will highlight how they envision the sustainable supermarket of the future, merging creativity with cutting-edge technology to solve real-world challenges in alignment with Coles’ mission.

A Collective Effort for a Greener Future
MasterTech is more than just a hackathon; it’s a testament to the power of collaboration across universities, industry, and the innovation ecosystem. By tackling the critical issue of sustainability within retail, this initiative reflects a shared commitment to making a positive impact on the environment and helping Australians live healthier, happier lives.

Stay tuned as we follow the MasterTech teams’ journey to Cisco Live, where they’ll showcase their prototypes and ideas for the sustainable supermarkets of tomorrow. Here’s to pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in retail innovation and creating a sustainable future for all.
