A landmark report launched today sets out a clear roadmap for SA to lead Australia in AI and critical technology adoption and the window to act is now.

South Australia has a once-in-a-generation opportunity to become Australia’s proving ground for critical technologies. That’s the central argument of The Transformation Link: Driving Adoption of Critical Technologies in South Australia to Create Economic Value report launched today at Future Ready SA: Critical Technologies and the Business AI Roadmap in Adelaide.

Produced by Innovation Central Adelaide in collaboration with Flinders University and Cisco through the National Industry Innovation Network, the report makes the case that SA’s competitive advantage won’t come from outspending larger states on research. It will come from becoming the place where technologies are applied, proven and scaled.

The opportunity is significant. The urgency is real.

AI alone is forecast to contribute $115 billion annually to Australia’s economy by 2030. Yet Australia currently trails global leaders in AI readiness. For South Australian businesses, that gap represents both a risk and an opening.

Flinders University Vice-Chancellor Professor Colin Stirling frames the challenge plainly in the report’s foreword: the barrier is no longer invention. It’s adoption.

Innovation Central Adelaide Director Dr Kathryn Anderson agrees. “AI and critical technologies are moving rapidly from experimentation into real-world adoption. The organisations that build capability, test solutions and take practical steps now will be best positioned to create value and competitive advantage.”

Three priorities for action

The report identifies three clear calls to action for South Australian organisations and government:
1. Position SA as the national testbed — creating environments where emerging technologies can be trialled, validated and scaled, reducing risk and accelerating industry uptake.
2. Support industry to adopt at scale — providing access to testbeds, expertise and capability-building programs that enable integration of AI, cybersecurity, robotics and advanced digital systems.
3. Build the future technology workforce — developing the engineers, technicians, researchers and digital professionals capable of deploying next-generation technologies across priority sectors including defence, health, advanced manufacturing, resources and space.

From theory to practice

The launch also marks the introduction of the AI Pathway for Business — a new Innovation Central Adelaide initiative designed to help South Australian organisations adopt AI responsibly, build capability and improve productivity through practical implementation.

A real-world case study from the Central Adelaide Local Health Network has demonstrated how AI is already supporting remote patient monitoring, clinical image interpretation and hospital operations while underlining that successful adoption depends on strong governance, workforce capability and ethical oversight.

The message for business leaders is straightforward: the technology is ready. The roadmap exists. South Australia’s moment to lead is here.

AI is fuelling a period of profound technological change, with far-reaching implications for productivity, competitiveness, learning and working.

The challenge for economies, firms and individuals is how we effectively organise ourselves to translate this new capability into lasting benefit. The National Industry Innovation Network was established to address this exact challenge. The NIIN is industry-driven and exists to bridge the gap between emerging technology and real-world adoption. It does this by coalescing universities and industry around shared infrastructure, applied capability and common purpose. The AI Adoption Moonshot represents the next evolution of that mission.

This report sets out NIIN’s first flagship “Moonshot” initiative.

It is ambitious in scale and practical in design. It reflects a clear understanding that fragmented effort will not deliver the infrastructure, skills, or confidence required to move at pace. Progress will depend on collaboration across institutions, sectors and jurisdictions. The proposed NIIN Sovereign AI Cloud and AI Skills Challenge are designed to remove structural barriers that no single organisation can address alone. Together, they provide a foundation for research, innovation, workforce development and industry engagement that aligns with Australia’s values and long-term strategic interests.

This report is also an invitation.

The success of the NIIN AI Adoption Moonshot will depend on the active participation of universities, industry partners and government. Through collaborative action we can ensure AI is adopted responsibly, at scale and in ways that strengthen Australia’s future prosperity. John Dewar NIIN ADVISORY COUNCIL CHAIR AI has moved from experimentation to implementation stage. Organisations globally are embedding AI into strategy, operations, research and service delivery. Successful AI adopters will source the right infrastructure, technology and skills. They will often be expert collaborators. There is a window of opportunity for Australia to accelerate progress in AI adoption and carve out competitive advantage in the process.

The release of the National AI Plan provides clear direction and the challenge now is converting strategy into action. Australia needs technology-rich environments where AI can be tested and embedded into processes in low-risk ways. Those environments need to be secure and sovereign, and backed by the skills required to get the most of available technology. Cisco knows innovation happens fastest when industry, universities and government work together. The National Industry Innovation Network embodies this approach.

Through the AI Adoption Moonshot, NIIN is creating the conditions for Australian organisations to move from intent to impact.

The two core initiatives of the Moonshot – Sovereign AI Cloud and the AI Skills Challenge – address the two most fundamental barriers to AI adoption: infrastructure and skills. This report sets out a path for Australia to capture the benefits of AI while building resilience, trust and longterm capability. Cisco has invested in supporting the NIIN to fundamentally change the pace of AI adoption in Australia.

Australian universities driving digital health transformation

Innovation Central Adelaide (ICA) is proud to be part of a growing national movement transforming the way digital technologies are adopted across Australia’s healthcare system.

As a member of the National Industry Innovation Network (NIIN), ICA is contributing to an ambitious, collaborative effort to address some of the most pressing challenges facing the health sector from workforce shortages and funding constraints to outdated infrastructure.

Health x Digital Transformation Report 2025-2026

A new report from the NIIN Health Alliance — the Health x Digital Transformation Report 2025-2026 — shines a light on how universities, industry, government and healthcare providers are partnering to drive meaningful and lasting change across Australia’s health system.

Featuring 13 case studies from across the network, the report demonstrates the real-world impact of collaboration, co-design and prototyping in accelerating the confident adoption of new digital technologies.

Three key areas of innovation

The case studies featured in the report showcase innovation across three interconnected areas:

Improving patient outcomes Virtual emergency departments, AI-powered clinical tools, digitally connected ambulances and safe care models are transforming the way care is delivered and experienced by patients across the country.

Building workforce capabilities Rapid digital upskilling programs, AI-enabled workforce redesign and new training pathways are equipping health workers with the skills and confidence they need to embrace emerging technologies.

Strengthening digital infrastructure Cybersecurity frameworks, next-generation connectivity and sandboxes for safe technology adoption are building the foundations for a more secure, scalable and connected health system.

Collaboration at the heart of progress

What unites all 13 case studies is a shared belief that real progress in healthcare comes through collaboration. When universities, industry and healthcare providers work together prototyping carefully, testing rigorously and building trust in new technologies innovation accelerates and the benefits flow through to patients, practitioners and the broader community.

Looking Ahead

As the NIIN Health Alliance looks to the year ahead, four priority areas will guide its work:

Advancing connected care — designing inclusive, digitally enabled models that expand access, enable remote monitoring, and integrate into existing clinical workflows

Strengthening digital infrastructure — supporting the secure and scalable integration of digital tools across the health system

Building workforce capacity — through upskilling and reskilling initiatives that prepare staff to confidently adopt and adapt to emerging technologies

ICA’s role

At ICA, based at the Tonsley Innovation District and operating in partnership with Flinders University and Cisco, we are committed to contributing to this national effort through research, student projects, concept development and industry collaboration.

We believe that digital transformation in healthcare is not just about deploying new technologies, it is about rethinking care delivery, empowering the workforce and building infrastructure for a more connected and resilient health system.

The challenges associated with delivering quality healthcare are well-documented: rising demand, workforce shortages, compounding risk (including cyber security) in the delivery of services in hospitals, via allied health services and in the home. Integration of digital technologies into healthcare is being driven by a range of factors:

The rise in community-based / in-home care: Remote clinical monitoring, in-home treatment and uptake of hybrid models for allied health delivery is being driven by patient preference and capacity to reduce demand on an overloaded acute sector. For example, in the aged care sector, the number of people using home care increased more than threefold over the period 2011-21.1 Currently the level of in-home care people can receive is impacted by a digital divide. Providing effective and efficient healthcare, particularly in rural and remote settings, presents complex and varied challenges, largely limited by access to infrastructure, geographical distance, and unique community profiles.

Uptake of virtualised care: The pandemic accelerated adoption of remote health consultations and created impetus for digitisation of other clinical and patient services that help patients take more control of their health and wellbeing, improve safety and create efficiencies in the health system. Virtualised care enables.

This paper does two things: 1. Articulate opportunities and challenges associated with technology in healthcare, and 2. Profile digital innovation assets that can tackle challenges at scale and turn words into action. proactive self-management of health and wellbeing as well as remote diagnosis and health monitoring. This is particularly beneficial for older people, those who have difficulty accessing healthcare settings due to mobility issues, and those who are prone to iatrogenic risks in a hospital environment. The use of sensors for health, frailty and mobility assessment / diagnosis in older people can impact their independence and quality of life.

Strain on technology infrastructure in the acute setting: The strain on technology infrastructure in acute healthcare settings has become a pressing concern, as evidenced by one Melbourne healthcare network where 46% of hospital internet traffic was funnelled through the wireless network – more than four times the initial forecast. This escalating demand is being generated by clinicians, administrators and patients, who are constantly creating and seeking diverse technology services such as data, voice and location-grade Wi-Fi coverage. Addressing this challenge, particularly during new builds, is crucial to avoid the costly and disruptive consequences of retrofitting an operational health environment. By establishing the right digital foundations from the outset, healthcare facilities can benefit from seamless connectivity and efficient infrastructure that has greater longevity.

Australia’s energy transition is accelerating, driven by climate imperatives, technological innovation, and global competitiveness. South Australia has emerged as a leader in renewable energy integration. A roundtable hosted by Flinders University’s Innovation Central Adelaide in September 2025 brought together academia, industry, and government to explore the challenges and opportunities herein. This paper distils the key insights from that discussion. It highlights emerging technologies driving the transition and discusses its digital enablement. It reveals barriers to adoption and makes recommendations on workforce and policy development. It concludes with recommendations for action by government, industry, and university.
